NOVEMBER 8, 2019 RESTORE YOUR HEARING

When I think of hearing loss, I think of causes as heavy metals and viruses. It is the aging process. I think of the herb Mullein for ear problems One herb that I do not think of is Gingko biloba This herb works deep inside the cochlea at the cellular level. It fortifies your immune system

Gingko flushes out toxins of the body and improves blood flow. There have been auditory studies that have proven the above results. Dr Norbert Holstein performed 19 different clinical trials over more than a 10 year period. Gingko is 82% more effective as a vasodilator

Even five years after the studies these individuals on Gingko had better hearing.

NOVEMBER 6 , 2019 RESISTANT FLU

One of the best herbs for that nagging resistant flu is Elderberry. The extract shows only a mild anti viral effect at the beginning of the flu yet it s major effect is post infection. This is where I think it is very useful

I include elderberry in our Sickly Tea available at Botanical Bounty 646 723 1823

Elderberry ha san immune- stimulating effect very similar to ozone therapy . It increases the production o the body’s anti viral cytokines- IL6, IL8 and TNF These cytokines not only enhance response but also directly the virus.

Elderberry is amazing with all its effects Get your ‘Sickly ‘ tea today with elderberry

NOVEMBER 5, 2019 POTASSIUM

While the mineral used to be abundant in the human diet, today most Americans barely meet half of the daily requirements tor potassium , yet consume approximately double the amount of sodium, As a physician who reads a lot and tries to educate my patients, I was surprised to learn this.

Previous research has revealed that a high sodium/potassium ratio raises cardiovascular disease risk, while other studies have found that increasing potassium consumption may reduce the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. This was remarkable news and reading the research was refreshing.

A high potassium may not be as bad as we once thought . Research indicates that a diet high in potassium may help keep blood pressure levels within the healthy range and can help cut systolic blood pressure by more than 10 points in individuals with diagnosed hypertension

Should be change our consumption of fruits and vegetables. The standard diet of the average American contained 3.5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables on average, providing 1,700 mg of potassium daily. In comparison, a fruit/vegetable-rich diet that included 8.5 servings of fruits and vegetables instead provided up to 4,100 mg of potassium daily,

More studies need to be done concerning potassium

NOVEMBER 4, 2019 CHERRIES

I am missing cherries . I love cherries. There are many medical health benefits to eating cherries. Cherries are small stone fruits that come in a variety of colors and flavors. There are two major categories — tart and sweet cherries, or Prunus cerasus L. and Prunus avium L., respectively.

There are many reasons to eat cherries. Here are some reasons

1. Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and other nutrients that your body needs to function optimally.

2. All cherries are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which may reduce chronic disease risk and promote overall health.

3. Consuming cherries, especially tart cherry products like juice and powder, may improve athletic performance and reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness.

4. Cherries can lower cholesterol

5. Cherries promote a better sleep

6. Over eight million adults in the U.S. suffer from gout. This inflammatory arthritis is triggered when a waste product called uric acid crystallizes within the joints, causing excruciating pain and swelling. In one study, gout patients who consumed cherries for just two days (both the fresh fruit, as well as cherry extract and juice) showed a 35% lower risk of gout attacks compared to those who did not eat cherries.

NOVEMBER 1-3, 2019 FOODS TO INCREASE SEROTONIN

Did you know that the ‘happy hormone’ serotonin is made in the gut and travels to the brain by pathways connecting the brain to the gut. The connection between ‘ the gut’ and the neurotransmitters has bene studied extensively in the last five years.

Healing the ‘ gut’ can improve your mood. Also the ingestion of food that boost serotonin are numerous. Serotonin plays a crucial role in regulating mood and also in promoting feelings of wellbeing and positivity.

Although some sources of boosting serotonin involve animal protein I rather use plant based tryptophan sources to boost serotonin. Butternut squash and sea vegetables can be used . Veggies like kelp, seaweed, and spirulina are all fantastic sources of tryptophan, that ever-essential amino acid. These veggies contain about 3 percent of daily tryptophan value There is a tree nut that has been discussed many times It is the Walnut. Walnuts are an incredible source of polyunsaturated fats, omega-6 fatty acids, and can reduce bad cholesterol. Walnuts also improve metabolism and can help control diabetes. They are quite high in tryptophan at .10 grams per ounce.

Get happy and consume at one of these foods.

OCTOBER 31, 2019 DESCOVY

In the last 5 years , the new addition of medications to treat HIV and to prevent HIV has been remarkable. I look back to the days when as a young physician we had only AZT. The first medication to prevent HIV in a negative patient who uses safe sexual practices was TRUVADA. Topday with less impact on markers of renal function and bone mineral density BMD—we have DESCOVY

DESCOVY for PREP must be prescribed only to patients confirmed to be HIV negative immediately prior to initiation of the medicine

It is insurance covered like Truvada. There was great efficacy in those patients who switched, as well as the above benefits.

The tablet is smaller and demonstrated safer profile through primary analysis.

Still today the greatest impact on HIV is in education. The company Gilead who produces both medications, TRUVADA and DESCOVY, has been one of the leading educators of HIV in all of its aspects. Kudos to Gilead

OCTOBER 29, 2019 WHAT KIND OF DO YOU PRACTICE ?

I am often asked what kind of doctor are you? I sometimes respond an Integrative Medicine physician. The look on their face is puzzling. I am trained in conventional internal medicine with a subspecialty in Cardiology. However in addition to the Fellowship in Cardiology I completed a Fellowship in Integrative Medicine. Back then it was called Holistic, Alternative or Complimentary Medicine Today it is Integrative Medicine or Functional Medicine. I have been practicing Functional Medicine before there was a Fellowship . This type of medicine encompasses the best of conventional and the best of complimentary medicine.

This week the Journal of the American Medical Association (one of the very top medical journals in the world that Health Care Practitioners count on for authoritative guidance) published the first comprehensive 5-year study on the effectiveness of Functional Medicine.

When comparing 1,595 patients seen at the Functional Medicine Center at the Cleveland Clinic with the results of 5,657 patients with a similar range of chronic health problems, seen in the Family Health Center at the Cleveland Clinic

The results were published In summary , taking a functional medicine approach to chronic conditions has significantly better results than one of the best traditional family health centers in the country.

I love the type of medicine I practice. I am good at it —No, I am great at it. I love talking to patients, being the detective to their problems and most of all- I listen to the patients.
