MAY 19, 2022 A DIFFERENT TREATMENT FOR COVID

During the last two years of the pandemic you have read about different drugs to treat COVID. Some of you might have read the very interesting articles posted on this blog, and others , like Dr Mercola’s website about supplements and herbs that have been used. You have read about Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine. I recently read an interesting article in the HerbalGram published by the American Botanical Council about Amla.

Progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of viral variants continue to spur research on herbal therapies. Disease prevention and treatment are integral to traditional medical systems of India, China, Thailand, Persia, and others. Amla (Emblica officinalis syn. Phyllanthus emblica, Phyllanthaceae) is a traditional medical food and herbal medicine. Different parts of the plant were used. The alma plant are reported to preserve the vitality of human cells and exert adaptogenic, analgesic, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antipyretic, antitussive, antiviral, expectorant, immunomodulatory, nootropic, and spasmolytic effects. I use alma for a variety of chronic diseases as well as cancer support in my practice.

I thought the research and study was complete I believe it allowed us to look closer at this plant. The authors concluded larger, more thorough studies are warranted. The authors had no competing interests.

MAY 18, 2022 AMARANTH

There are many gluten free grains. The gluten free grains I prefer to have patients try are brown rice, teff, millet, quinoa, buckwheat and amaranth.

It’s a rich source of protein, fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin E. And studies show us that it could help with weight management, heart health, and bringing down excess inflammation Amarinth is also rich in Vitamin C. It's a source of vitamin C, which is vital to the body's healing process because it helps process iron, form blood vessels, repair muscle tissue, and maintain collagen

Amaranthus is a cosmopolitan genus of annual or short-lived perennial plants collectively known as amaranths. Some amaranth species are cultivated as leaf vegetables.

Since Amarnath is not a common gluten fere grain— you will have to experiment with different recipes. When it comes to gluten free recipes I always turn to books by friend Jennifer Esposito. If there is one person who is creative and artistic in the kitchen— it is her

I tried some of her recipes. I prefer having an amaranth porridge with blueberries

MAY 17, 2022 HIGH DEMANDFOR HONEY

For all its sweetness honey is in high demand. It is nature’s most hard working creation by the most sacred creatures— honeybees. It is loaded with nutrition, anti oxidant and is an excellent humectant. This means it has the ability to draw and seal in moisture. Therefore it can be used very effectively for wound healing. There are excellent studies on its benefit to heal wounds and burns.

I know some patients that use honey as a moisturizer

In 2021 The french cosmetic company Guerlain started a Bee Lab It was designed to start researching the benefits and biological properties of honey. I wish more companies would be so dedicated. From Guerlain they have developed and now sell Royal Advanced Youth Oil derived from black honey and royal jelly. This will have incredible results. All the components of a beehive can be used medicinally- propolis, bee venom, honey , bee pollen and of course honey.

I am dedicated to saving bees. For this reason, I am a beekeeper. I am also the Vice President of the American Apitherapy Society. ( apitherapy.org) I urge you to send a donation to this worthy organization which educational for the public and health care professionals to learn about bees and the components of a hive.

MAY 16, 2022 GREEN TEA

Green tea ( Camilla sinensis) is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It even exceeds coffee. . It has a ton of health benefits that include reducing inflammation, improving brain function. Plus, it tastes great hot or cold. Researchers have found that the benefits of green tea are due to its high level of antioxidants, which fight off harmful toxins and free radicals in the body.

It is the most researched herbal medicine. Years ago with Robert Pastore I wrote and published an article on the benefits of green tea. Green tea is low in calories and contains antioxidants that help boost metabolism, this it can be used for promoting weight loss.

The researchers believe that the polyphenols in green tea may help to reduce the absorption of sugar from the intestine. The main polyphenol is EGCG. EGCG has shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells.

It is great to promote mental alertness and to help cognitive symptoms as we age. I even use green tea to help arthritis. In a recent study, participants who drank green tea daily reported reduced pain and stiffness, as well as improved physical function.

There are even studies to suggest green tea protects the heart. I cannot find any reasons why you shouldn’t drink green tea. Unfortunately one cup doe snot suffice. You have to drink more than 5 cups of green tea hot or cold. I prefer to suggest green tea with a high percentage of EGCG to be of benefit.

Have a cup of green tea today…

MAY 12, 2022 HOBBIES FOR DOCTORS

I have always stated that a hobby can improve your health and boost your self-esteem I recently read an article about the 10 best hobbies for doctors. One of the first hobbies were Gourmet cooking. In a 2014 survey by American Medical Association (AMA) Insurance, almost half of physicians (46%) cited gourmet cooking as an outside-work activity they enjoyed.

The second hobby was not surprising to me. It was knitting. Australian surgeon Rhea Liang crocheted her way through a 2019 medical conference, explaining on Twitter that she could concentrate on the presentations better while her hands were occupied. I have always done needlepoint during medical conferences. If I do knit at conferences, I do it with a circular needles. Needlework crafts like crocheting and knitting have been shown to forestall mild cognitive impairment better than many other activities, including reading and playing music. Knitting also can cut stress, improve mood, enhance creativity, and help prevent arthritis and tendonitis. So I picked a good hobby

Other hobbies discussed were playing an instrument, writing, reading , stand up comedy, riding the waves and making art. I do a lot of reading * outsider the medical field) and making art.

All individuals to have a hobby. I feel it is an essential part of living.
