JUNE 20, 2023 ADAPTOGENS

I had a relaxing weekend in West Palm Beach. I saw family and friends. I visited my Uncle Henry who is 98 . I went to Pan’s Gardens . I swam I stitched and I meditated.

I am sure you remember the I Love Lucy episode when she does a commercial for Vitameatavegamen. It is so funny. Google it . By the end of the skit - she is tipsy from the alcohol content and ' Are you unpoopular "
I have substituted Vitrameatavegemin for Ashwaganda.( Withania somnifera )

Hello friends.
I'm your VitameataASHWAGANDA man
Are you tired, run-down, listless?
Do you poop out at parties?
Are you unpopular?
The answer to all your problems is in this little bottle.
Vitameatavegamin. I propose withania somnifera

and No Minerals.
It is an herb

Yes, with Vitameataashwaganda, you can spoon your way to health
All you do is take a great big tablespoonful after every meal.
Mmmmmmm.....
It's so tasty, too!
Tastes just like candy!

So why don't you join all the thousands of happy peppy people and get a great big bottle of ASHWAGANDA tomorrow!

That's ASH -WA- GAN -DA ( WINK!)

Ashwaganda is an adaptogen. It has many properties. It is anti-inflammatory, an anti oxidant, a hypoglycemic agent as well as an immune supportive herb. There are many botanical adaptogens. Most of what I have learned about adaptogens comes from David Winston, RH lectures and his books. He loves adaptogens as much as I do. He is the father of adaptogen use. The uses of this herb are many ranging from asthma, arthritis to adrenal support, cancer and failure to thrive in children.
The best asset of this herb is that it improves and conserves adaptive energy.
With all the stress in this world and your every day life, your adrenal glands are truly "pooping' out. You have adrenal fatigue. For those of you that do not know this - the adrenal gland is on top of each kidney. It releases the stress hormones for your life. After much usage of this gland and its hormones it begins to get tired and poop out. This is called Adrenal Fatigue.
The good news is that you can take ashwaganda. There are clinical trials and studies to support the use of this herb for anxiety, cognitive and neurological disorders as well as Parkinson's disease.
I love it as it increases my stamina. I do not think I need more stamina than I have but a little extra is always good. I find it terrific fort memory and cognition. There are studies for this herb for energy.

Try it!
You will like it !

JUNE 15, 2023 BACOPA

There are many supplements I use for neurodegenerative diseases. Some include Lion’s Mane, Prevagen, Vinpocetine and Bacopa. A recent review was ;published int he American Botanical Council’s HerbalGram

Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri, Plantaginaceae), known as Brahmi in Ayurvedic medicine, has been used for centuries to promote calmness, to treat epilepsy, and to enhance memory and learning. Bacopa is used particularly by the elderly for its antioxidant properties that help protect the brain against oxidative damage and cognitive decline. Bacopa extracts have been studied for their nootropic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties. In this review, the authors highlight the health benefits and mechanisms of action of bacopa extracts, focusing on the benefits for patients with cancer or neurodegenerative diseases.

The results were not suprising since there are other studies with the same benefits for Bacopa. The results of the studies include significant improvements in speed of visual information processing and learning; reduced state anxiety; increased accuracy and memory consolidation; improved memory performance and retention, working memory, and cognitive processing; reduced stress and improved mood; increased cognitive function

I take Bacopa and Lion’s Mane everyday I have seen it sharpened my memory .

JUNE 14, 2023 SEA MOSS

Have you ever tried sea moss? When I was studying medicine in the Caribbean especially in St. Vincents and Barbados I was introduced to Irish Sea Moss drinks. At first they tasted not so bad, and as I drank more and more on sunny days to ease my heat exhaustion, they began to taste better. My first ones was at the Nutmeg Cafe in Grenada. I then had a priest make me one on the island Petit St Vincents.
Seaweed is effective against many health conditions. Sea Moss is effective against varicose veins, halitosis ( bad - foul smelling breath) inflammation and dysentery. Irish sea moss has also been used as an emollient. It has been used to prevent cholesterol formation, and to decrease blood pressure ( hypertension) It is used in the island for many bladder conditions. Sea moss provides the most magnificent healing properties from cancer and radiation poison. This is due to the high iodine content. Therefore it can be used to treat an under active (hypothyroid) condition.
Sea moss is also an excellent source of magnesium and sodium in addition to the iodine.

SEA MOSS DRINK RECIPE:

2 oz. dried sea moss (available at Caribbean markets )
Juice of ½ lime
2 ½ cups water, divided
4 cups evaporated milk ( can use almond or unsweetened soy)
½ sugar ( I use agave)
2 tsp. Angostura Bitters

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place sea moss in a bowl with the lime juice and ½ cup of the water. Allow to soak overnight.
2. Drain, place in a saucepan with 2 cups of water, and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until the sea moss looks like a wad of jelly. Remove the pan from the heat and cool.
3. Place the seam moss mixture in a blender with the evaporated milk and sugar. Puree for 1 minute, or until smooth. Add the bitters and serve over crushed ice.

JUNE 13, 2023 TESTOSTERONE

As men we need to know our testosterone levels, It is not about your maleness or your sexual libido. It is about that lower free testosterone is a risk factor for heart disease. Recently a reputable heart journal dispelled the myth that the low total testosterone is the risk factor for heart disease. It is the free testosterone that is the risk factor.

So ask your doctor to check your total and free testosterone as well as your prostate specific antigen. The later is important if you a candidate to start hormonal therapy. I am on the fence about testosterone. I do know that anabolic steroids have been abused . There are serious side effects as enlargement of the prostate, prostate cancer, and anger/ agitation . Yet testosterone is needed if the man is depressed and has a low libido ( or sex drive ) It doesn't always to be given in intramuscular shots. It can be given orally or administered by rubbing cream ( androgel or compounded testosterone) into the skin.

There is also another answer. The answer is to block the aromatase enzyme that converts your testosterone to the female hormones as estrone, progesterone and lutenizing hormone. Some of these natural aromatase inhibitors include chrysin and quercitin ( both of which are bio-flavinoids) and pomegranate seeds.

All in all, testosterone is an incredibly important hormone for health, longevity, and vitality – in both men and women. Leading a Primal life, free of excessive stress and peppered with smart, intense workouts, full of healthy animal fats and plenty of vitamin D, should be enough to promote adequate amounts of testosterone coursing through your veins

Have your testosterone level checked. Ask your doctor...

JUNE 12, 2023 LYME DISEASE

Lyme disease is the top vector-borne disease in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that around 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year. However, some research organizations believe that this number is much higher, in the range of 400,000. I believe we have a new epidemic of Lyme Disease

Symptoms begin with flu-like body aches, chills, neck and joint pain, sweating, headache, and fatigue. If left undiagnosed or if early antibiotic treatment is ineffective, the disease progresses into a chronic inflammatory response that mimics an autoimmune disorder, which can lead to:

• Insomnia and poor sleep
• Digestive complaints including nausea
• Severe joint pain and inflammation
• Chronic fatigue and lethargy
• Mood disorders such as anxiety and depression
• Cognitive issues that include brain fog, forgetfulness, headaches, and poor concentration
• Migraine headaches
• Heart or breathing problems
• Extreme sensitivity to light and sound
• Post Lyme Disease Syndrome (PLDS)

In our practice we use herbal remedies, intravenous support, bee venom therapy and supportive oligonucleotide therapies to treat Lyme Disease We even have referred some of our patients to facilities for stem cell therapy

JUNE 8, 2023 WALNUTS

Walnuts are a great source of omega 3. Walnuts (Juglans spp., Juglandaceae) has been shown to lower blood lipids and modify inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, reducing risks of cardiovascular disease. Walnuts' reported benefits are greater than can be accounted for by their fat content. Evidence suggests that plant polyphenols in walnuts and other nuts boost antioxidant defenses and reduce inflammation. Polyphenol-rich diets increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and reduce low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, blood lipids, and inflammatory markers.

Among tree nuts, walnuts have the highest levels of polyphenols. The walnut kernel and its seed coat, or pellicle, are richest in polyphenols. Walnuts' hundreds of compounds include flavonoids, flavanols, phenolic acids, hydrolyzable and condensed tannins, and lignans

I would encourage you to read the study on walnuts. It was published in

Amen RI, Sirirat R, Oda K, et al. Effect of walnut supplementation on dietary polyphenol intake and urinary polyphenol excretion in the Walnuts and Healthy Aging Study. Nutrients. March 2, 2023;15(5):1253. doi: 10.3390/nu15051253. Appeared in the HerbalGram of the American Botanical Council

JUNE 7, 2023 POMEGRANTE

Pomegranate is a fruit i think of when I think of the Apple in the Garden of Eden I use pomegranate as a natural aromatase inhibitor preventing testosterone conversion to estrogens. A recent study, he use of pomegranate was studied to control appetite.

Appetite control is an important factor involved in successful dietary treatments for obesity. Antioxidant polyphenols have been studied as potential complementary approaches to manage obesity. Pomegranate (Punica granatum, Lythraceae) juice, which is high in polyphenols, may play a role in preventing obesity and protecting against atherosclerosis, hypertension, cancer, and type 2 diabetes mellitus There have been other studies using other herbs for appetite control In this study pomegranate extract (PE) Pomanox® P30 and pomegranate juice (PJ) PomeGreat® were used

After readng the study in the American Botnaical Council HerbalGram , the authors note that the mechanisms underlying the potential effect of the PE extract on satiety are unclear, although the role of pomegranate polyphenols in suppressing appetite has been reported to be similar to that of the appetite suppressant sibutramine.

Thus pomegranate can be useful is helping saiety

JUNE 6, 2023 HONEY AND CINNAMON

After this years American Apitherapy Society meeting I was thinking about an article i read about Honey and Cinnamon I received an article from a friend that was written January 17, 1995. Below are some uses of honey and cinnamon... the "Honey and Cinnamon" book.

Honey and Cinnamon can be used to treat:

1. Heart Disease - a honey and cinnamon paste can be used on bread instead of jelly. It reduces cholesterol. Regular use of the above relieves shortness of breath (dyspnea).

2. Arthritis - use one cup of hot water with 2 teaspons of honey and one tsp of cinnamon powder to relieve chronic arthritis. A small study of 200 patients who did the above revealed that 73 individuals felt no arthritic pain after 10 days.

3. Bladder Infections - ingest 2 tablespoons of cinnamon powder with 1 teaspoon of honey to kill bacteria in the bladder.

4. Stomach Aches - honey with cinnamon powders cures a belly ache.

5. Colds/Flu - I have used this remedy. One tablespoon of lukewarm honey (remember not boiled), 1/4 spoon of cinnamon powder daily for three days will cure the common cold. Great for sinuses- although I always add stinging nettles.

6. Acne - mix 3 tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder into a paste. Apply to acne before sleeping and wash off next morning. Remarkable.

7. Skin infections such as eczema ( as well as wound healing ) - use equal parts of honey and cinnamon applied to skin.

I know that since 1995 there have been more scientific studies on honey and cinnamon. I have used both to treat illnesses with success. I pride myself in using Mother Nature's gifts to heal. It goes back to the basics...I love going back to the basics.

Until tomorrow…
