SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 CHRONIC ILLNESS

There are some dates in your life you never forget where and what you were doing. We think of our marriage, the birth of children, the days loved ones died and much more. For others, it would be November 1963 the day President Kennedy was shot or maybe July 20, 1969 when man landed on the moon. For some , it is 18 years ago, September 11, 2001. I was in Federal Court as a Juror across from the Twin Towers.

As a physician who volunteered at St Vincent’s on that day it was tragic. It is even tragic 18 years later when I see individuals who were exposed to the toxins, from that disaster. Many individuals have died from various cancers who were there, and many have chronic illnesses that started 5 years after their exposure.

It is difficult to assess how to find out what is causing their chronic illness. Many of those affected have respiratory issues. For others it is malaise, fatigue, hair loss, multiple skin issues and much more. I search for a individuals exposure to toxins/molds. I utilize in my office in Connecticut- hair analysis for toxic metals and two tests from Great Plains Laboratory.

The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. is a world leader in providing diagnostics for metabolic, mitochondrial, and environmental factors in chronic illnesses. We offer a variety of state-of-the-art metabolic tests such as the Organic Acids Test (OAT), GPL-TOX (Toxic Non-Metal Chemical Profile), IgG Food Allergy Test, and our newest test, the MycoTOX Profile, which assesses mold exposure

Reishi - the plant of longevity as it has been called is a beautiful glossy yellowish mushroom. It possesses medicinal properties and has been enxtenively studied. I drink Reishi coffee . It has been used for age related conditions as coronary heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

The various components in the mushroom make it active. These are alkaloids, sterols, coumarins, and 1,3 beta glucans.

The main actions of this mushroom are

  1. oxygen free radical scavenger

  2. neuroprotective

  3. cardiovascular tonic

  4. antitumor

  5. chemotherapy enhancing

  6. radiation protective

  7. stress reducing

SEPTEMBER 9, 2019 MOSQUITOS

This captivated me..The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator

“Across our planet since the dawn of humankind, this nefarious pest, roughly the size and weight of a grape seed, has been at the frontlines of history as the grim reaper, the harvester of human populations, and the ultimate agent of historical change. As the mosquito transformed the landscapes of civilization, humans were unwittingly required to respond to its piercing impact and universal projection of power.”

This tiny insect has caused much havoc . It has caused empires to collapse. Possibly even Lyme disease is spread by a female mosquitos I say female as only female can bite

Today, the Northern United States have cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis caused by mosquitos.

The book is informative, educational, historical, and provocative in a science wise way

SEPTEMBER 6-8, 2019 OXYMELS

September is National Honey Month. I have lectured on oxymels at the Charles Mraz Apitherapy Courses sponsored by the American Apitherapy Society ( www.apitherapy.org ) in the last few years. An oxymel is a specialized sweet and sour herbal honey; a sweet honey mixed with a little sour vinegar. This combination is used as a carrier for herbal infusions, decoctions, concentrates, tinctures and much more.

Oxymels can be used as a gargle or even as a vehicle for intense herbal aids. Some of the best oxymels can be made with garlic and other herbs

  1. To prepare the oxymel base add one pound of honey to 1.2 pint vinegar

  2. Place the mixture in a pot and simmer to make a consistency of a syrup

  3. To this one normal adds a medicinal agent ( of your choice - infusion, decoction, tincture etc) to prepare it as a gargle

Simple as that

SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 HONEY AND BURNS

September is National Honey Month. Honey is one of the best remedies to apply directly to a burn. I remember milk or cold water used to applied directly. If you get a burn merely spread honey on the burn or wound and leave it for 30 minutes. You can reapply if necessary

Honey immediately seals off the damaged tissue from the air, reducing the pain and will work to rehydrate the wounded tissue from the burn. All the natural components of honey will help heal the damaged tissue. Honey has bene shown in studies to be a natural antiseptic and natural antibiotic

SEPTEMBER 3, 2019 MEDICINES DEPLETE NUTRIENTS

Many of the medications that we take can deplete all of nutrients You should stop your medications but check with a health professional that deals with functional medicine. You should be aware of these pitfalls so you can supplement what you are missing.

One of the most frequently prescribed medications are antacids. These medications decrease stomach acid but also calcium, phosphorous, folic acid and potassium .I feel the antacids are the major cause of symbiosis or small bowel intestinal overgrowth ( also known as SIBO)

In the same way antibiotics deplete the good bacteria, B vitamins and Vitamin K

There are studies that indicate 16- 52 % of woman experience depression. I think this can be attributed to the fact that oral contraceptives deplete B vitamins, magnesium, folic acid, selenium zinc , tyrosine and serotonin.
