APRIL 2, 2018 INSOMNIA

Insomnia affects millions of Americans. There are an abundance of prescription drugs that have  been prescribed by health care practitioner. I find other ways of helping my patients stay or fall sleep.

One of the easiest treatments is to engage in more exercise. Exercise is one of the lifestyle changes that can be added or modified if already performing. Exercise promotes relaxation  and even raises your core body temperature.  Aerobic exercise has been shown not only to improve sleep , but reduces the anxiety that if sometimes associated with sleep.

When I discuss herbs I suggest two herbs for sleep: Passion Flower and Skullcap. Both are excellent nervine herbs that help reduce anxiety. I have seen many suggest Valerian  There have been trials to indicate that Valerian is effective in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. Sometimes I feel valerian can be paradoxical .

Another herb which can be used  is lavender. I like to spray lavender oil on my pillow three times a week .

Acupuncture done weekly can be great way to relax and help sleep issues

MARCH 31, 2018 DOG DEPRESSION

Yes, it is possible your own dog could be depressed.  It is not like they could tell you but a change in behavior might be the first sign. You must therefore be attentive to your dog.  The easy signs ( like humans) are loss of appetite,  excessive sleeping, tiredness, and even aggressive bizarre behavior.

I would suggest seeing your vet and getting some labs. There are treatments that can be used. These are not unlike some we suggest in humans. I would stay away from medications as there are many supplements and herbs that work.

Here are some simple things to do for your dog if he/she is depressed.

1. Increase attention to your dogs needs. Play more , cuddle more and kiss more I kiss my dog Chaplin, every minute I can

2. I would give him/her new toys that are mentally stimulating. Not the usual stuffed animal toys, but chew toys are better. I recently installed a Orb Round aquarium. It amazes me how Chaplin sits in front of the aquarium watching the fish swim by

3. Light therapy. I do not know a light pet light that is suggested. I do know in the summer Chaplin and I spend more time in the sun on the terrace and in the park.

I often think : WHO SAVED WHO

MARCH 29, 2018 MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

In the past I have discussed multiple sclerosis ( MS ) with respect to its cause and treatment., There are studies on the benefit of bee venom ( BVT ) in these patients.

It has been found that women with MS have lower levels of folate, magnesium , vitamin E and other nutrients. MS patients had a lower intake of certain nutrients.

It has  been postulated by doctors that MS itself depletes the body of nutrients or possibly in some way inhibits nutrient absorption.  It is possible that some of these nutrients might affect the disease process.

Another study which was looked at is the role of vitamin D in MS patients

MARCH 28, 2018 Lauris nobilis

The name, Lauis nobilis signifies an herb with a rich history. This is true. Also known as Bay Leaf, this herb has much use in the culinary area, but equally it is an herb with medicinal properties. It has been studied for its antibacterial and antioxidant benefits

In ancient times, crown of bay leaves were woven and placed on the head of a man who were honored as scholars. The word 'bachelor' were unmarried men who graduated from academics wearing a crown of laurels or bay leaves

The essential ol of this herb is found in soaps , creams and cosmetics As an herb, it is beneficial to the digestive system of most individuals. There are other reported medicinal uses as type 2 diabetes, cancer, oral inflections, inflammation and high cholesterol

I find this herb to be beneficial when used in combination with other herbs. I believe it is not used as much as it should be. The bay leaf  contains many minerals as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium and manganese. It also contains Vitamin C , riboflavin, niacin folate and B6

MARCH 27, 2018 HBOT

In the last five years I have referred more patients for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a variety of neurological conditions as well as Lyme Disease . Today there are good studies and research available. There is also some medical reimbursement for HBOT treatments in certain disease conditions

HBOIT is not new to the world. It was introduced in England in 1662. There are many articles written in the twentieth century There was a review of HBOT in 1877 by Arntzeniusa which had 300 references.
I recently read a review by HBOT expert Dr Paul Harch in The Townsend Letter. It was very informative He discussed that the Dutch surgeons started using high pressure oxygen therapy for surgeries, infections and poisonings in the 1950s

This paved the way for its use today. Recently I had a 85 year old female that had uro-sepsis that lead to septicemia. She threw emboli to all of her digits ( fingers) some worse than others. I thought she would lose some of her digits by amputation I advocated for HBOT. The patient had 10 treatments with complete resolution of gangrene and required no amputation

Dr Harch describes hyperbaric as a 355 year old therapy which appears to be epigenetic therapy n a broad sense. He is right. The article in the April 2018 Townsend Letter should be read. What other disease might be amendable to oxygen therapy? Controlled trials exist and there must be more done

MARCH 26, 2018 COFFEE

Times are changing. There is no data now being written about coffee being considered a superfood because it is rich in antioxidants. There are more antioxidants in coffee than are in blueberries. These antioxidants play a significant role in enhancing brain function, reducing the risk of Alzheimer's Disease, protecting the heart, increasing energy and fighting cancer.

Coffee now is a major player in fighting disease.

Some facts are that  those drinking coffee on a regular basis have a 65 5 less chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease. There is a 60 % less chance of developing Parkinson's disease in daily coffee drinkers. These both are chronic disease with an enormous amount of health care dollars being spent.

The types of cancers that have been studied with coffee are the following: Breast, oral , brain , colorectal , liver , prostate and uterine cancers

Other diseases that have been reducing by the daily use of coffee are diabetes. Coffee helps fight depression , enhance longevity, and reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis

So when you reach for that black coffee without sugar and dairy think about all the great benefits of the ingredients in coffee as cafestol, plant sterols, quinine and chlorogenic acid.

There are many complaints for a patient with dry eyes. These vary from stinging to blurry vision to light sensitivity.  There are artificial lubricants available. There is a problem with this . These are professional eye drops which cannot be bought in stores. These are preservative free . able to use with your contacts, safe in children and in pregnancy-and no rebound redness. There are no side effects

There are other homeopathic eye drops available in addition to tear stimulation. These are allergy eye drops, cataract eye drops, and both ortho-K thin and thick eye drops
